Sustainable Livelihood Initiatives
Planact conducted a comprehensive Sustainable Livelihoods Assessment in Sol Plaatjies to help develop an intervention strategy linking settlement upgrading to HIV/AIDS concerns as part of the Joburg Connections Project.
The exercise included data gathering through focus groups and interviews and provided extremely pertinent information such as: the history of the settlement patterns, population figures, income situation, health, education, basic services, availability of land for food cultivation, labour skills in the settlement, and housing type. The report was presented to council officials in the City of Joburg and to a meeting of key community stakeholders. A similar study has been scheduled for Ivory Park.
In Ketleng municipality, Planact attempted to assist stakeholders in a semi-rural community in White City to put a plan in place for upgrading a settlement currently on private land (owned by Mazista Tiles). Mazista Tiles offered to cede land to the local municipality if they will develop it.
Masizane Women’s Housing Cooperative in Ivory managed to get another tranche of funding processed by the ATC to begin building again. Planact is assisting the cooperative with back-up support as their housing delivery efforts continue in Ivory Park
