Asivikelane results no 7: Please clean our toilets!

Jun 18, 2020 | Blog, Template, Weekly Covid19 Updates

The provision of sanitation in metro informal settlements has not improved and remains at crisis levels everywhere except Ekurhuleni. This situation should be addressed urgently in order to slow down the exponential spread of Covid-19 in the informal settlements of Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape.

  • In Johannesburg and Cape Town many residents reported dirty or partially cleaned toilets.
  • Many broken and blocked toilets have still not been fixed in Cape Town and eThekwini.
  • In Johannesburg, eThekwini, and Cape Town some residents still do not have access to any sanitation at all.

The good news this week is that the water situation in Cape Town and Ekurhuleni has continued to improve and both metros’ traffic lights are very close to green.

Asivikelane has grown from 181 to 200 informal settlements and with the arrival of Green Anglicans and 1to1 the campaign has grown to ten civil society organizations.
