One of the main aims of the Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP) for Planact is to make sure that:

1. Communities participate in the initiation and the implementation of the upgrading. Key is to promote participation.
2. Communities participate and benefit from the empowerment and gather sustainable livelihood during the process.
3. The upgrading provides a habitable environment for people living in informal settlements.

Some of the communities where this project has been implemented include Thembelihle informal settlement, Protea, Soweto as well as Ivory Park in Tembisa.
