Vosloorus Food Gardening and Nutritional Support Project
Planact provided support to the community of Vosloorus through various development initiatives most notably the People’s Housing Process (PHP) process.
Planact’s work in Vosloorus was largely focused on supporting the work of the Rethabile Cooperative (a formally registered gardening cooperative established in 2004) and Masizakhe Home Based Care (a registered NPO established in 2003). These community organisations have come together as the joint cooperative in a food gardening and nutritional support project, targeted at improving food security and income generating opportunities, particularly supporting HIV and AIDS affected community members. Planact’s role was to facilitate and provide support to the groups through its skills in community organising, project management, organisational development, and monitoring and evaluation, and to assist in obtaining specific skills training in food gardening which resulted in a close working relationship with The Greenhouse Project.
The project received financial support from the National Development Agency (NDA). The overall objective of the project was to alleviate poverty by improving food security and income-generating opportunities for the poor in Vosloorus Extension 28.
